In their apparent attempt to destroy a fully loaded TPLF/EPRDF owned fuel tank trailer in Ethiopia’s remote town of Kimir Dingai on Wednesday, the newly re-grouped resistance group, the Ethiopian Unity and Freedom Force (EUFF), accidentally claimed the life of 20 civilians and 21 others injured.
The incident happened when the ruling party owned trailer hit a powerful landmine set by the rebels engulfed with fire. The passengers from a nearby bus that was traveling from Gonder to Woldia town approached the flaming truck to try to put out the fire before an ensuing huge explosion burned them to death.
A EUFF spokesperson reportedly expresses his organizations deep regret over the unintended loss of civilian lives in a target that was aimed at destroying the property of a repressive regime.
EUFF rebels recently stepped up their military operations inside Ethiopia focusing mainly on destroying TPLF/EPRDF property and targeting prisons to free political prisoners.
Previously, they attacked the notorious Adigrat maximum prison with a powerful bomb that resulted to the death of 14 inmates and a number of security personnel besides freeing a number of political prisoners that was sentenced to languish in the prison since the 2005 election violence.
In April last year, they set ablaze over 60 business units that belonged to the ruling party officials and their supporters in Metema town near the border with Sudan.
The EUFF rebels are active in northern part of Ethiopia.
The minority regime in Ethiopia, which is resented by the majority of Ethiopian people blamed EUFF rebels as Eritrean-backed shiftas.
