Closed reception centers for asylum seekers to be sent out of the country, can lead to more violence and antisocial behavior, think psychiatrist Basilier Aina Vaage
Vaage, who is chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at Stavanger University Hospital, believes there is a very big challenge in itself to come to Norway, to be afraid, to have a story in your luggage, be heard, believed and dare to trust people . To introduce closed reception will make the situation even worse for asylum seekers who have been refused, she says.
- It is absolutely terrible and misunderstood. Pressure, trauma and depression will increase. There will be more violence, acting out and broken lives. I do not believe in it at all, she says to Our Country.
Proper measures must be to reorganize health services and improve the reception of asylum seekers to the most traumatized are sorted upon arrival to the country and made an offer.
- We must have an asylum system that protects people and not just put them on hold for infinitely long time, says Vaage.
Supports her adviser Jon Ole Martinsen in Norwegian Organization for Asylum Seekers (NOAS). He believes enclosed receipt will be to make political capital on a tragedy.
- You can not protect himself against such tragedies perpetrated. You can not lock up asylum seekers who use their right to apply for asylum, he says, and suggests that the receipts rather be filled with a meaningful life and that those who are in need of mental health care get it.
